Amy is a supporting character in Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover. She is the long-time best friend of Lesslie Holder who slept with her brother, Dean Holder, as the two relied on each other during their grief.
History[]
Amy and Les had been best friends for seven years prior to Les’s death. At the time of the events in the book, Amy is dating a boy named Thomas, and their relationship predates Les and Holder’s move to town in the fourth grade.
After Les’s passing, Amy visits Holder’s house and asks to go into Les’s room to collect a few pictures that belonged to her. Although they haven’t spoken much in the days following the death, Amy and Holder share a deep, unspoken grief. Amy is visibly emotional, crying as she gathers Les’s belongings.
Later, she joins Holder in his bedroom and breaks down in his arms. The two share a moment of vulnerability and physical comfort rooted in their mutual loss. Amy expresses guilt and anger over not realizing the extent of Les’s struggles. She feels that, as Les’s best friend, she should have noticed signs or been confided in. Holder reassures her that she’s not to blame.
Their shared grief momentarily leads to a kiss and physical intimacy, though Holder is aware of the emotional complexity and the fact that Amy has a boyfriend.
