Biography[]
Honor hasn’t had a single boyfriend with an average life span since she started dating Kirk at thirteen. Still heartbroken over the way that relationship left her feeling like she was choking on scar tissue, Honor's life has been deeply shaped by her first love.
Kirk was a kind farm boy who could drive a tractor, bale hay, flip an electrical breaker, and even repair a car transmission that her father couldn’t fix. About a month before Honor turned fifteen—and two weeks after Honor lost her virginity to him—Kirk’s father found him semi-conscious and bleeding in the middle of their pasture. Kirk had fallen off a tractor, which ran over him, injuring his right arm. While the injury wasn’t life-threatening, an insightful doctor discovered that Kirk’s fall was caused by a seizure brought on by a brain tumor.
Kirk lived three more months. During that time, Honor rarely left his side. She was the first and last girl he loved, and the last person Kirk saw before taking his final breath.
Honor’s experience with Kirk’s death left a profound mark on her. She developed an unusual pattern of falling in love exclusively with terminally ill boys, finding it nearly impossible to love anyone else. Most of her days and nights are spent in online chat rooms for the terminally ill, where she connects with boys who have an average life expectancy of six months or less. Although their small town doesn’t provide a steady stream of ailing suitors, Honor has found companionship within driving distance of Dallas.
Two of these boys lived their final weeks within range of Honor’s care. She devoted herself to ensuring their last days were filled with love, becoming the last person they saw and the last girl they loved before their passing.
