It Ends With Us is a film based on the book of the same name, written by Colleen Hoover. The movie was written by Christy Hall and starred and directed by Justin Baldoni. The movie was produced by Wayfarer Studios in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film premiered in the United States on August 9, 2024.

Synopsis[]

IT ENDS WITH US, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the compelling story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.[1]


Though coming from a complicated past, Lily Bloom (Blake Lively) has always known the life she wants. While living in Boston, she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) and believes she may very well have found her soul mate. Soon, however, questions arise about their relationship, and to complicate matters, her high school love interest, Atlas Corrigan, comes back into the picture, putting her relationship with Ryle in jeopardy.[2]

  • In July 2019, Justin Baldoni announced on Instagram that he optioned the rights to Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us via his company Wayfarer Entertainment. The two were introduced to each other by Justin’s book agent/Colleen’s former editor, Johanna Castillo.[3][4]
  • At first, Baldoni had signed to be the director, but it was announced in September 2020 he had stepped off, stating “I realized this is a much more important project for a woman to direct”. However he says there is still a chance he could be part of the project as an actor instead.[5]
  • In October 2021 Justin Baldoni shared to his TikTok account that the first draft of the movie script had been completed.[6]

  • On January 2023 it was announced that Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni had been casted as Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid respectively. Justin Baldoni will also direct the film and executive produce with Blake Lively, Colleen Hoover, Steve Sarowitz, and Andrew Calof.[8]
  • On March 2023 an open casting call search was launched for the role of young Lily via https://www.itendswithuscasting.com/[9]
  • On April 19 2023 it was announced that young Lily had been casted.[10]
  • On April 20 2023 it was announced that Brandon Sklenar was casted as Atlas Corrigan.[11]
  • On May 1 2023 it was announced that Jenny Slate was casted as Allysa.[12]
  • The movie was originally set to be released on February 9, 2024[13] On January 9, 2024 Colleen announced the date was moved to later that same year due to the writer/actor strike.[14] The date was later moved to August 9, 2024.

  • In the books Atlas' restaurant was called Bib's. In the movie they called it Root.
  • In the books, Lily doesn't want to know the gender of her baby until the birth. In the movie, however, she goes to the doctor to find out beforehand.
