- Layla's name was originally "Isla". Colleen Hoover wanted to name the book after one of the female leads, in the same way Verity is named after one of the characters. "Isla" as a title was an issue with the publisher, so she had to change her name. She made a list of names that were similar to Isla and ended up picking Layla. Colleen now thinks Layla is a much better fit and flows better than Isla.[1]
